REFLECTION
Experiences
I didn't think I had received so much information or lessons about typography in these 14 weeks. I've had a lot of struggles with assignments, but when I look at the tasks I've done, they pay off. I'm grateful I've learned a lot in this typography class. I love being able to try making my own fonts and there are other projects too, but what I remember most is making my own fonts. It was a very pleasant experience even though there was a lot of time, effort and thought to be put into it. I also got a lot of valuable experience from Mr Vinod and Mr Charles. Typography makes me more disciplined in managing my time and makes me prefer to work in time rather than on time. That's a great experience.
Observations
Frankly before, I didn't know about typography at all. I just saw that all the typography was the same of all types and I always thought that all the o's must be perfect circles. After I learned about typography for 14 weeks. I learned a lot of things. I always find myself looking at the typography of a product on boxes, food packaging, and more. And the funny thing is, I became involved in providing comments or feedback for the typography. Such as the wrong kerning, the wrong typeface, the colour that doesn't match the food at all, and so on. I'm actually often surprised when I think about these things. In fact, I didn't think of it as a food packaging typography at all. Thanks for the typography class.
Findings
Like I said before, I didn't really pay much attention to typography at first. What I know when I hear typography is that there is Chinese calligraphy, cursive writing, etc. It can be said that my knowledge of typography used to be very low. At first, I could say that I underestimated this class a bit, like "ah maybe we just made up calligraphy". But I was wrong. I found that typography is not that simple, there is a lot of history behind it, there is a lot of effort that must be done to achieve the fonts that we meet today. Especially after learning to make fonts and deconstructing references fonts, I really appreciate every font that has been made. I have become more attentive to how the shape, curve, and thickness of a font. I found a lot of fonts that I thought were ordinary but actually very beautiful. I am very grateful that I have received a typography class this semester. I also found that these typography traits also affect my design. How I become more disciplined, neater and structured in doing assignments, etc. In addition, typography is one of the biggest supporters in a design, no, it can even be said that typography itself is a design. I am so grateful to have gone through this class with Mr Charles and Mr Vinod.
