RESEARCH

WEEK 2 / 07.09.2022

Since last week was a public holiday, this week we have an introduction to MIB. Sir ask us to read more about our MIB so we can clearly understand what are we learning.

Second, we had a brief task 1 (dl before 11.09).
1. E-Portfolio link
2. Pinterest Board:
3. List down 3 of your favourite Motion Graphics works and explain why you like them the most.

Next, we had an introduction to motion graphics
1. Brief history of compositing and motion graphics principles (Notes from Mr. Fauzi)
- Motion Graphics:
Animation, but with text as a major component. Essentially, it's animated graphic design.
- A way to communicate with the viewer, and add depth to the story (with music and effective copy).
- Kind: ads/ branding, title sequences for movies, video, and storytelling (to share information).
- Example:

2. What are Motion Graphics?
What is Motion Graphics?
(1) Which came first?
(2) Who started it?
(3) What exactly is Motion Graphics?
(4) So, why Motion Graphics?
(5) Your idea matters

Conclusion:
Motion graphics and 3D animation are both essential in the world of cinema, as they both tell stories, communicate ideas, and evoke wonderment. Motion graphics have its roots in the early films, with intricate motion designs that establish a tone and remind audiences of the franchise. The art form was first recognized by John Whitney in 1960, who founded Motion Graphics Inc. Motion graphics is an art that borrows elements from photography, illustration, typography, and more to create visually engaging moving compositions.
Motion graphics videos move, interact, and transform in a way that tells a story or explains a process. They provide designers with a vehicle to let their imaginations run wild, facilitating the use of visual metaphors to represent ideas that give the viewer a unique perspective on a story, product, or service. Motion graphics can demonstrate complex relationships, visualize data, and convey narratives in a way other mediums cannot match. They can communicate complex ideas in a short amount of time, making it easier for anyone from 5 years old to 105 years old to understand brand messages.
Motion graphics are ubiquitous today, found on digital ads, phones, and TV and films. They help startups and Fortune 500 companies maximize their ROI and produce visually engaging content without breaking the bank. Even in the B2B market space, 88% of marketing professionals believe that video positively impacts marketing results and ROI.

Lastly, Mr. Fauzi briefed us directly about our second exercise for week 2.
Refer to this tutorial video to create a composition:
Create your own composition based on the requirements below:
1. Download all of the design elements from this link:
2. Using Photoshop, create a 1080 x 1920 size canvas. Trace and crop the images using the Pen tool.
3. Create 3 different compositions (using the same design elements)
4. Choose only 1 of the best compositions and animate it. 15 second.
5. Submission on the E-PORTFOLIO blog

WEEK 3 / 14.09.2023

LECTURE:
1. Fundamental 3D and Digital compositing principles
2. Watch the lecture video:

Fig. 1.1 / Composition in Art

Composition is the term used to describe the arrangement of visual elements (line, shape, colour, value, texture, form, and space—are organized or composed according to the principles of art and design).

Fig. 1.2 / Unity

a. Unity
Do all the parts of the composition feel as if they belong together Unity in an artwork creates a sense of harmony and wholeness, by using similar elements within the composition and placing them in a way that brings them all together (Variety adds interest by using contrasting elements within the composition).

Fig. 1.3 / Balance

b.  Balance
The sense that the composition "feels right" and not heavier on one side.
Having a symmetrical arrangement adds a sense of calm, whereas an asymmetrical arrangement creates a more dynamic feeling.

Fig. 1.4 / Movement

c. Movement
Ways to give a sense of movement in a composition: the arrangement of objects, the position of figures, and the flow of a river.

Fig. 1.5 / Rhythm

d. Rhythm
In much the same way music does, a piece of art can have a rhythm or underlying beat that leads your eye to view the artwork at a certain pace.

Fig. 1.6 / Focus

e. Focus (emphasis)
The viewer's eye ultimately wants to rest on the "most important" thing or focal point in the painting, otherwise the eye feels lost, wandering around in space

Fig. 1.7 / Contrast

f. Contrast
Composition with high contrast—strong differences between light and dark, for example—have a different feel than paintings with minimal contrast in light and dark.

Principles of Form and Design
Fig. 1.8 / Principles of Form and Design

Sir wanted us to become the concept artists, not the designers. Becoming a concept artist (Art Director) is harder than a designer.

PRACTICAL:
1. Compositing Software Interface.
2. Exercise technical and design exploration.
3. PROJECT 1 - ASSIGN Task 1: Technical and Motion Graphics Sensibilities.

Then Mr. Fauzi gave us a bit tutorial for Null object 3D.

WEEK 4 / 21.09.2023

LECTURE:

PROCESS

WEEK 2 / 07.09.2023

Exercise #1
My very first exercise is I need to look at what kind of motion graphics I like and what kind of motion graphics exist out there. I did a little bit of research and this is the list of examples of motion graphics.

Here are the motion graphics that I chose.

1. Infinite Zoom

I remember this trend is everywhere on my social media. It’s amazing how it plays with our eyes and brains. It feels like hypnotizing you. I love how this motion graphic, as its name, Infinite Zoom. So, keep zooming until you might feel overwhelmed with it. It is fun, cool, and inspiring to me. This is my third favourite of motion graphics.

2. Mova/ Movie Introduction

This motion graphic is also on a trend. I often find it in the introduction of a movie in a cinema. I think almost all famous movies now use motion graphics as their film introduction. Every time I see this motion graphic, it just feels impressive and marvellous at the same time (especially when it’s synchronised with the music, it’s just 👌). As if you are becoming a drone or a bird which sees the city or sees everything in a 360 rotation. I think this is my second favourite for motion graphics.

3. 2D Motion Graphics

I really like the way the 2D illustration looks, because it looks clean and easy to understand (not overwhelmed when you look at it). It would be complete if that illustration had a simple movement or animation, which this motion graphics. I would say this kind of illustration is my cup of tea. This is my first favourite of motion graphics.

Exercise #2

1. Composition - Still Image (3)
a. Composition #1
Fig. 2.1 / Composition #1, Week 2 (13.09.23)

b. Composition #2
Fig. 2.2 / Composition #2, Week 2 (13.09.23)

c. Composition #3
Fig. 2.3 / Composition #3, Week 2 (13.09.23)

2. Animated Poster (15 seconds)
I chose my first composition. I'm using this music as my guard tempo.

I animate it in Adobe After Effects.

Fig. 2.4 / Progress in After Effect

Then I render it in Media Encoder. Here is my first result.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 3 / 07.09.2022
- I like your second composition
- I like how you put music as your rhythm

NEXT COURSE OF ACTION

WEEK 2 / 07.09.2022
- W1 task deadline Monday
- W2 task deadline Wednesday (15 secs)

WEEK 3 / 14.09.2022
- Do project 1

SUBMISSION: Project 1

REFLECTION

Experience
ok
Observation
ok
Finding
ok

To be honest, the first exercise I don't really get it. It's a little bit abstract for me to understand it. This makes me not really satisfied with my result. Besides, it's been a while for me to use Adobe After Effects again. This exercise is like a warming up for me to start doing After Effects projects again.
