RESEARCH

WEEK 1 / 03.04.2022
For the very first activity, we were doing ice breaking for knowing each other. Following by introducing to MIB (tasks, group project, timeline, deadline, etc). For our group project, we are collaborating with GSK (a British multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company in Malaysia). We need to make an Art Installation using blisters and inhalers (that were wasted already). For this project, we were divided into some groups. This is my group.

Group 2 - Nutquacker
- Lui Hsiao (Tressa)
- Luisa Audrey
- Michelle Angeline
- Sea Hirayama

Tasks 1 and 2
As a group, we need to compile Tasks 1 and 2 into a project document. Here is a brief explanation of Tasks 1 and 2.

A. Task 1: Create an empathy map and define the problem statement
1. Introduction
2. Defining the challenge
3. Creating the project plan
- What will we work to produce?
- What constraints will we need to manage?
- What measures and indicators will help us know our ideas are successful?
4. The project brief
- Write a short to clarify the problem statement
- Include supporting ideas/ thoughts
- Where/ how design has the opportunity to provide a solution
5. Challenge Analysis (assumptions and questions)
- What do we know?
- What do we believe we already know about this challenge?
- What would we like to learn more about?
6. The target audience
- Who will we be designing for?
Consider the core audience and extended audience.

B. Task 2: Ideate a solution for the problem statement
1. Ideation (value, needs, challenges, and barriers)
- What are the values for the targeted audience?
- What needs are addressed?
- What are the challenges to be faced?
- What barriers are there that oppose it?
2. Describe the Idea
- Concept name
- Visual references and ideas generated
- How does it work?
- One sentence concept description
- What does it involve, both in building and using it
- What we hope to learn more of through this idea

Then later Task 3 is the prototype and Task 4 is realisation.

Individual
On the other hand, there is an individual project to do:
1. Weekly group member assessment (google drive)
2. Design journal: e-portfolio (blogger)

Notes from #1 meeting
Next, we have a meeting with the experts. Here are the notes that I have taken from their explanation.
- Many people throw inhalers and blisters that empty already
- Want to give a thought to not throwing it, so it won't add waste in Malaysia
- Can use for something else (Art Installation)
- The project will launch on 14 June (environment day: nature)
- The project is more towards sculpture/ 3D (can see Red Hong Yi's project as a reference)
- Material: blisters (80%) and inhalers (20%), can use other things for supporting property
- Size: 10 ft width x 7 ft height x 2 ft depth
- Need to think about the budget.

PROCESS

WEEK 1 / 03.04.2023

We have our first meeting to define and divide the workload. We also were discussing our rough ideas. We put all our work discussions on the Miro board.

Fig. / First Meeting, Week 1 (03.04.2023)

My tasks are creating the questions for the questionnaire and survey for both, public and asthma patients. I also need to interview the patient when the question is done.

WEEK 2 / 12.04.2023

Ms Lilian gave us additional information about the disposal of the medicinal products.

Additional:
  • The emphasis is proper disposal of medical waste, specific inhalers and blister packs.
<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UzL1fz9dMRpgMWvFjinZHxJT6wCvDyF7/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

Here is what I get from this information:
  • Brand
1. (June 2022) GSK launched #GiveBack campaign
- To accomplish net zero emissions (by 2030)
- Collaborate with 50 BIG Pharmacy outlets (Klang Valley and Seremban)
- Collect unused, unwanted or expired asthma inhalers for proper disposal.

2. (This year) second phase #GiveBack Campaign
- Conjunction with World Environment Day (June 5)
- Expanded partnerships (BIG Pharmacy, Alpro Pharmacy, Caring Pharmacy and Pantai Hospitals & Clinics)
- To collect used medicine blister packs (empty, unused/ expired) on top of asthma inhalers.

3. Construct a unique art installation
- Partnership with Taylor's University.
- Highlight:
a. Importance of proper medical waste disposal and its impact on the environment
b. Plant the seeds of environmental awareness among young Malaysians.
- Will be brought by Truck Roadshow across Klang Valley
- To raise awareness of the importance of proper disposal of pressurised asthma inhalers and blister packs (contribute to landfills and pollute the environment)

  • Environment
1. Healthcare systems contribute to waste landfills and pollution
- Around 5.9 million tonnes of waste to landfills and over 4% of carbon emissions.

2. Asthma inhalers contain propellants (to disperse medication)
- Usually discarded before completely empty.
- Propellants contribute to global warming (each inhaler can fill 300 balloons)
- Can be considered hazardous waste. Need proper disposal.

3. Blister packs, very common and convenient for medicines
- Contribute to landfill (even though small) almost 85% (in Europe)
- May leach into the ground or waterways

  • Action
1. This campaign invites Malaysians
- Drop off their used/ expired/ unwanted asthma inhalers and used blister packs at xxx collection.

For my group's progress.
Our leader, Tressa, compile and arrange our interview and questionnaire questions on Google Documents.

Fig. / Compile in Google Documents, Week 2 (12.04.2023)

I collected the questionnaire for 32 people and 1 person as an interviewee.

Fig. / Link Survey, Week 2 (11.04.2023)

Thank God, in only 1 day we can get 110 respondents. Since we already fulfilled our needs (100 participants), we closed the questionnaire.
Fig. / Respondents, Week 2 (11.04.2023)

Then the result we put back into Google Documents. Here is our result for Questionnaire:

At night, I was supposed to interview 2 interviewees. However, another interviewee#2 can't make it because of busy work. So I recorded the interview with interviewee#1.

Fig. / Data Collecting, Week 2 (11.04.2023)

Then, Tressa provided us with a place for presentation slides.

Then I make it simple to put on presentation slides:

Fig. / Provide Google Slides, Week 2 (12.04.2022)

Then my next task is making the map empathy and problem statement. For the map empathy, I'm referring to interviewees. But before that, I learned what is map empathy and how to make it. Here is my further reading. Here is my progress on Miro.

Fig. / Map Empathy, Week 2 (12.04.2022)

Then I decided to make a new problem statement instead of using the old one.

Fig. / Problem Statement, Week 2 (12.04.2022)

I did some research about Medicinal packaging (blister packs and inhalers), gas from unfinished inhalers, and leftover medicine. Here is my research.

<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/118VnCXCB8lwFpdMuSzijHF45HcN3en5G/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

Then I combined it and make it shorter into a slide.

Fig. / Provide Google Slides, Week 2 (12.04.2022)

Then we have our presentation tomorrow.

WEEK 3 / 17.04.2023
We need to make the ideation and also organize and pick out doable ideas from Miro.

Ideation: Targeted audience values, Needs, Challenges, Barriers

Fig. / Ideation, Week 3 (17.04.2022)

Here are sketches that I can do.

Fig. / Doable Sketches, Week 3 (17.04.2022)

Last but not least, we finalise our ideas. In this case, we combine my and Luisa's ideas, Wave of waste.

Then we combine everything into presentation slides then lastly we record our presentation.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 2 / 10.04.2022
- You guys need to decide what's the ideation for task 2 later on (sea creatures, landfill, etc)
- I'll send you additional information from GSK about disposing of the medicinal product
- For now, you guys set the questionnaire to public and interview the interviewee. Then after everything is collected, you guys decide on the user persona. All of this needs to be done within this week because next week is the deadline for Task 1.

WEEK 3 / 17.04.2022
- Need to overlook again the presentation slides, no need to include the framework because included in the project document already.
- Very well research in persona, interview, and survey
- Well presented
- I need some clarification about the survey result.

WEEK 4 / 24.04.2022
- Divide the Task 1 and Task 2 blog

NEXT COURSE OF ACTION

WEEK 2 / 10.04.2022

REFLECTION

Experience
This is my first experience making user empathy and doing research about it. I'm glad that I can have my group so that I can learn from this class and apply it to my other group (I have other 2 classes that have groups, which involved design thinking as well). It's not that easy. I need to do a lot of research to gather all the data. But I'm glad I can learn this module. This is also my very first experience collaborating with another company.
Observation
Through this project, I also learn that blister packs it's really hard to be recycled because of complicated materials (plastic and aluminium foil). I never thought before that medical packaging can harm to the environment. This module really makes me think about all of this. I just knew also that we can just dispose of the medicine by flushing it into the toilet.
Finding
However, I do research and found that it's harmful to dispose of the medicine in the toilet bowl because can cause water pollution. I hope this reflection can be looked at by GSK. Might be the source on the internet that I found is not valid. But I hope that GSK did deep research about it so that it won't be against their campaign.
