LECTURES

WEEK 1 / 03.04.2022

Topics and Sub-Topics
Introduction to Module: Subject Outline and Expectations
Setting up an academic blog, and establishing a social platform for real-time sharing.

12 Principles
Mr Kamal talked about Animation Fundamentals as a beginning. Not only 2D uses 12 principles, but 3D animation also uses the same 12 principles. In this project, we will use Blender for our platform. Then Mr Kamal talks about the work prospect that we will have or we will experiences. He reviewed again about 12 principles that we have learned already in Animation Fundamental Class. Here are the 12 principles.
1. Appeal
2. Timing
3. Spacing (slow in and out)
4. Arcs
5. Squash and stretch
6. Drag, follow through, overlapping
7. Pose to pose
8. Staging
9. Exaggeration - Idea
10. Secondary action - Add an extra dimension to know the animation
11. Anticipation
12. Solid drawing - (3D) poses to drawing

What is the 12 principles or technique that you have learned or experienced before to make a thing fluidity (less jerky)?
- Drastic change (extreme pose - break down - extreme pose)
- Squash and stretch
- Not too much drawing or poses

Exercises
Next, Mr Kamal briefed us about MIB (exercises and projects). For exercises:
- Ex 01. Bouncing ball (W2)
- Ex 02. The ball with tail, stretch and squash (W3)
- Ex 03. Drawing Good Poses (W4)

Note: since our platform is Blender, we can use the free 3D character that Blender provides.

There are lots of 'things' that we can animate instead of humans. Character Animation:
- Vehicle animation
- Effect animation (cloth, fur, collision - rigid to soft body)
(simulation)
- props.

Projects W6
For projects, specifically on W6, we will make a walk cycle 3D animation.
Walk cycle: contact - down - up - contact - flip content.
ps: an extra mark of cartoonists (to make stretch and squash)

Addition:
MLO 1 - Basic knowledge (principles)
MLO 2 - Technical skill
MLO 3 - Critical, creativity | action | references (key, extreme, breakdown, in between)

2D vs 3D
The different 2D and 3D animation:
#2D
- rough
- tie down
- clean up

#3D
- layout
- blocking
- polishing

Note: Graph Editor is our best friend.

WEEK 3 / 17.04.2022

Animation Flexibility
Exercise 2: Ball with tail animation
Squash and Stretch, Drag, Follow Through and Overlapping.

Mr Kamal begins the class by giving us feedback on our previous exercise (exercise 1). Then he reviewed about flexibility, we learned this before in animation fundamental class.

<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FKqR0IFyJp_4YIMMkTHdKOGRStYQk1w9/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

Flexibility
1. Elasticity of shape
- Squash
- Stretch
2. Appendix
- Drag
- Static
- Move

Animation Principles
1. Cartoonist - Squash and stretch
2. Squash and stretch
- Elasticity
- Flexibility
- Life

Then we have a short demo of how to rotate, squish and stretch the ball. Then we have to download the pendulum file for the second demo (tail).

WEEK 6 / 08.05.2023
He began by reviewing clarity in Animation.
- Staging
- Secondary action
- Exaggeration
- Anticipation
  - Action (follow through)
- Solidify

<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lKIKCyXTaQImLznu2ieCsYNzu1Uvxbbb/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

In practical:
1. 2D Animation - draw
2. 3D Animation - rigged character (snow/ male and Rain/ Female)

In exercise 3 we need to explore poses.

Staging
1. Camera
- Frame size (LS/ ES - FS - MS - CU - ECu)
- Angle
Dolly in and out is different with zoom (lens)
For angle: eye level, high angle, and low angle
Don't jump to ES to ECu
- Camera work

2. Character
- Action: solid drawing (line of action, silhouette, contrapposto) - timing - duration - hold and pause
- Expression
- Personality (story and character development)
- Avoid twinning

3. Background

WEEK 7 / 15.05.2023
Mr Kamal started by giving feedback and I need a lot of improvement in my exercise 3.

TUTORIALS

WEEK 2 / 10.04.2023
Mr Kamal demonstrated how to animate a 3D ball. We learn what the graph editor is. From the graph editor, we can animate the ball without touching the thing, indeed Graphic editor is the 3D animator's best friend. As we can see in the red pen, we're using a bezier and linear type of line. Bezier for falling action (z) and linear is for the direction of the movement (y/x).

Fig. / Graph Editor, Week 2 (10.04.2023)

Then we also learn about the layers or timeline. In the timeline, we can adjust the keyframes. We can adjust the timing (second) by dragging the keyframes. In this point, Mr Kamal emphasizes us to be constant at this. This is the key.

Fig. / Timeline, Week 2 (10.04.2023)

Last but not least, the work board itself. From here, we can see clearly the arcs. In our exercise 1, we need to come out with something like this.

Fig. / Workboard, Week 2 (10.04.2023)

In exercise 1, we need to do observation first (the bouncy, timing, etc).

Then Mr Kamal closed it with a tutorial on how to render it.

WEEK 3 / 17.04.2023
Mr Kamal demonstrated how to rotate and stretch the ball. We can't rotate too much. We need to plan it so that later can stretch. Here, I'm using 45 degrees.

Fig. / Rotate, Week 2 (10.04.2023)

After rotating, we can squash and stretch. so that the ball looks more alive.

Fig. / Stretch, Week 2 (10.04.2023)

The second demonstration, it's about the pendulum. We can make the wiggle movement by editing the layers or from the graphic editor. At first, Mr Kamal edit from the layer, but then he changed it to graph editor because of less jerky.

Fig. / Layer, Week 2 (10.04.2023)

To separate each bone. Turn off the eye sign.

Public Holiday

WEEK 5 / 01.05.2023
Public Holiday

WEEK 6 / 08.05.2023
In the tutorial, we explore how to make poses for certain expressions.

- For the controller, under the pose mode
- Kinematic
   Forward Kinematic (FK)
   Inversed Kinematic (IK)
- For copying pose,
   Pose - copy pose

I did some exploration.

EXERCISE #1
At first I observe each of the balls. Here are the references.

Fig. / Soccer Reference, Week 2 (15.04.2023)

Soccer Ball:
- Bouncy (ok ok)
- Light (ok ok)

Fig. / Ping Pong Reference, Week 2 (15.04.2023)

Ping Pong Ball:
- Bouncy (very)
- Light (very)
Fig. / Bowling Reference, Week 2 (15.04.2023)

Soccer Ball:
- Bouncy (no)
- Light (no)

Fig. / Beach Ball Reference, Week 2 (15.04.2023)

Soccer Ball:
- Bouncy (ok)
- Light (very)

After observing and studying each of the balls, then I started to animate it.

Animation

For animation, Mr Kamal thought for the x in graph editor need to use linear instead of bezier. However, after I looked at another reference on Youtube, it used Bezier and turns out good. So I was trying to use bezier instead of linear (hopefully this is it's alright).

Animate beach ball
I like to animate beach balls. It feels relaxed and chills instead of other balls. The timing or the tempo is slower. Also, not much gravity on the balls.

Animate bowling ball
I don't like to animate this ball. It's really hard even though it's short. Have certain gravity, but when I tried it looked so weird. I hope this animation is fine.

Fig. / Ready, Week 2 (15.04.2023)

Animate Ping Pong Ball
I also like to animate this ball. The ball itself is solid and easy to bounce. Because of the easy to bounce, the different between the first jump and the second jump is not many, not like other balls. I don't know what layout that suits the ping pong ball, so I decided to use default background and colour it with purple colour.

Fig. / Ping Pong animation, Week 2 (15.04.2023)

Fig. / Ready, Week 2 (15.04.2023)

Animate Soccer Ball
Animate this ball is the most normal of all balls. Everything from the bounce, lightness, and gravity are all normal.

WEEK 3 / 17.04.2022
Before I do the second exercise, I did revisions for exercise 1 first.

Fig. / Stretch and rotate progress, Week 3 (17.04.2023)

Stretch and rotate are two different things, so it's a bit hard. Here is the result.

Fig. / Stretch and rotate, Week 3 (17.04.2023)

Here are the instructions for exercise 2.
- Deadline:
- Submission procedure:
a. Attached is the file upon submission (Mp4 Video format)
b. Upload the work on the e-portfolio and put the link in the text section

EXERCISE #2
There are 2 tasks in this exercise. For the first task, we use one of the balls and then put rotate and stretch on it. It's really hard and looks so weird.

Then the second task is make the animation of pendulum.

Fig. / Pendulum in Real live, Week 3 (17.04.2023)

Here is my reference. Here is the instruction.

<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pwmKVY4BSvlU0KP41eidGDB99FYN7pLQ/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

It is really easy following this tutorial. First, we animate the movement of the head, then we animate the first bone, then just copy and paste to the second and third bone. In my opinion, the result is much better than I do it one per frame.

The movement of the head. I adjust the graph editor.

Fig. / Head, Week 3 (17.04.2023)

I adjust the rotation of the pendulum then copy and paste to other bones.

Fig. / Bones, Week 3 (17.04.2023)

Here is the result.

Fig. / Pendulum, Week 3 (17.04.2023)

Then I combine everything in After Effect

WEEK 4&5 / 24.04.2023 - 01.05.2023
Public Holiday

WEEK 6 / 08.05.2023
The third task is the emotion pose. We need to make pose the character's body and facial expression to depict the action and emotion. Here is the instruction.

<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EDQBZ0b9B51kxflQ2c-rsgXGl_UM9Lql/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

There are two characters that have provided
- Rain - https://studio.blender.org/characters/5f1ed640e9115ed35ea4b3fb/v2/

I used Snow (male) as my character.

Before I dive into the exercise, I did research for references. Here is my reference.
Fig. / Angry Reference, Week 6 (08.05.2023)

Fig. / Sad Reference, Week 6 (08.05.2023)

Fig. / Scared Reference, Week 6 (08.05.2023)

This week is quite tough for me because I need to move out of my place. So I'm very busy and tired. I almost can't do my exercise 3. I hope that the result is still fine. Here is my progression.

I try to choose not to twine, so I was looking at the reference from the cartoon style. Somehow it looks a bit weird in the leg.

Fig. / Angry Progress, Week 6 (08.05.2023)

I feel a bit rigid about the pose, I might need to revise it after class.

Fig. / Happy Progress, Week 6 (08.05.2023)

I really like the sad pose. It draws the heartbroken feeling.

Fig. / Sad Progress, Week 6 (08.05.2023)

I made a bit different with the reference. It looks like he saw a cockroach :v

Fig. / Scared Progress, Week 6 (08.05.2023)

Here is the Result#1

FEEDBACK

WEEK 2 / 10.04.2022
(Bowling Ball)
- The image is blurry
- There is exceeded contact for the ball
- Make sure to put the object inside the safe action
- The text is a bit blended with the background
- Slightly too high for the bowling
- Bounce twice is enough
- The size and the timing are good

(Soccer Ball)
- The timing is good
- Add rotation would be better

(Ping Pong Ball)
- Adjust the camera, to show the ball falling from top
- The size and the timing are good

(Volley Ball)
- There is exceeded contact for the ball
- Slightly slower would be better

Overall good job!

WEEK 6 / 15.04.2022
(Happy)
- The shoulder looks a bit weird
- The finger doesn't make it too flat
- Don't forget to adjust the small details
- See it in every direction
- The best reference not taken from a cartoon but from real footage (because the details have been simplified)

(Scared)
- Camera eye-level
- See the negative space and silhouette

(Sad)
- Angle

(Angry)
- See the line of action
- The legs look weird

Need a lot of improvement. Study line of action - silhouette - then pose.

REFLECTION

Exercise 1 - WEEK 2 / 10.04.2022
I felt a bit left behind by my friends because all of them were more familiar with Blender than me. They took 3D modelling last semester. I just take it this semester. So I need to adapt faster so that I can be caught up. This is my first time using Blender. It's quite complicated because the keywords are different from other platforms.

Exercise 1 - WEEK 2 / 10.04.2022
ok

sad because can't do better and need a lot of improvement.
the problem always: camera angle
need more study on silhouette and line of action
