LECTURES

WEEK 9 / 29.05.2023
Mr began with briefed us about project 1B (jump action). Then he continued by giving us feedback about project 1A. After receiving feedback, we start to learn about cartoony animation.

Cartoony Animation
Cartoony - Naturalistic
- Exaggeration
  Squash and stretch
- Action
  Neutral - anticipate - action - overshoot - repair
  : Action is the key.

Animator's survival kit: Jump

Jump Animation

Moving Hold

If a lot of poses or actions, put a stop or a moment for the audience to think. This is very important to make not to look rushed.

Timing and Spacing Animator Pixar

The rhythm and timing of the animation are like a good musical score - crescendos and drop it quiet.

Variation in Timing
- asymmetry
- 3 speeds (slow, medium, fast) in the same time.
- Creating and breaking patterns

TUTORIALS

WEEK 9 / 29.05.2023
We had a tutorial for jumping animation, it's project 1B.

Fig. / Demo Jump, Week 9 (29.05.2023)

It's so hard because I'm not really familiar with the contact, pose, key and timing. Here is the result of my demo in a tutorial class. Need a lot of improvement.

NEXT TO DO

WEEK 9 / 29.05.2022
- Do Project 2 (not too complex, cartoony, playing with squash and stretch)
- Deadline: 5 June 2023

EXERCISES

WEEK 9 / 29.05.2023
Turns out that we have the second part for Project 1B is our Project 2. We were required to make jump animation. Mr Kamal asked us to make a cartoonist style, not a realistic style. With the same character, here is the instruction.

Before starting it, here are my references.
For the key, extreme, etc, I was referring to this animator.

These are the real-life of jump examples.

I plan to make a superhero landing.

Here is my progress.

At first, I want to make a normal jump first.

Anticipation

Back to Neutral

Put camera and background

This is the normal result jump

Then I make the jump higher and longer. I also repair the hand to make it like preparing to jump higher.

Change the landing pose, like a hero.

Back to Neutral

Set the camera and background.

Here is the result.

Then I edit a bit in Adobe Premiere Pro.

WEEK 13 / 26.06.2023
After I can manage my final project by at least 50%, then I did the revision for Project 2.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 12 / 19.06.2022
- The opening is too long
- The setting for the shadow looks weird
- The anticipation looks too slow
- The leg cannot be sliding
- The timing looks floaty
- Up and down can be faster a bit
- landing needs 2 feet
- Prefer normal one

WEEK 14 / 03.07.2022
- Much better
- A bit sliding at the end
- Can make the graph editor bezier in the beginning, so that there is a bit of acceleration.

REFLECTION

I thought that Mr Kamal wanted us to do the cartoon style, but it turns out that my animation skill is not that good until he said that he prefer the normal one. I have a lot of struggles with this project. I kept having a sliding part (the part that Mr Kamal doesn't like) and a bit jerky (not sure what is the solutions).  However, Thank God I still can repair it and can manage it in the end. I'm a bit sad about this module because Mr Kamal didn't say a good comment at the beginning. It makes me don't have any motivation to do it because I lost my confidence already. I hope next time Mr Kamal can give at least a bit of good comment to support the confidence of the student.
