LECTURES

WEEK 11 / 14.06.2023
Mr Kamal straight away started the tutorial.

TUTORIALS

WEEK 11 /14.06.2023
Today, Mr Kamal gave us a demo or tutorial for each character model. He explained how to make a clean space before we model it.

Before modelling, think and plan first what basic shape we will choose. The minimum vertices for the cylinder are 8, 16 would be best.

WEEK 12 / 21.06.2023
Mr Kamal started by giving us advice for rendering in cycles. Put denoise and noise threshold. We can reduce the number of max samples first to see the result of the rendering.

Fig. / Denoise and Noise threshold, Week 12 (21.06.2023)

Then we have a feedback session for Project 1 (Hard Surface). Mr Kamal suggests I to not use the corner background.

Fig. / Background, Week 12 (21.06.2023)

After the feedback session, Mr Kamal explains to us how to make the face. We need to study the wireframes or edge loops for the face.

In the tutorial class, Mr Kamal also shows us how to use the Lattice.

WEEK 13 / 28.06.2023
This week is only consultation.

EXERCISES

WEEK 11 / 14.06.2022

I plan to make Mario my model. Here is my reference.

Fig. / Mario Reference, Week 11 (14.06.2023)

Before starting to model, need to prepare the clean space first.

Fig. / Clean space, Week 11 (14.06.2023)

Make the simple model

Fig. / Simple model, Week 11 (14.06.2023)

For the head top part, use the cube that has been simple deform. Don't forget to count the vertices. Later we need to join the vertices.

Join the vertices

Fig. / Join the vertices, Week 11 (14.06.2023)

Then I make the shoes and arm.

WEEK 12 / 21.06.2022

Then suddenly I'm thinking about how to put the clothes because Mr Kamal hasn't explained it in the tutorial class. I'm looking for references on YouTube and I found the full tutorial on how to make Mario. So I decided to redo it from the start based on the YouTube tutorial.

Reference

Here is the picture reference. I change the reference because the previous blueprint is not that clear.

Fig. / Other references, Week 12 (21.06.2023)

First I make the face first.

Fig. / Face Base, Week 12 (21.06.2023)

Then put the eyebrow and the moustache

Fig. / Additional Hair, Week 12 (21.06.2023)

Then make the English hat.

Fig. / English Hat, Week 12 (21.06.2023)

Then I show it to Mr Kamal my progress so far.

WEEK 13 / 28.06.2022

After the class, I continue to do Mario Models. I continue to do the hair.

Fig. / Hair, Week 13 (28.06.2023)

Then I make the upper body

Fig. / Upper body, Week 13 (28.06.2023)

Then after that, I straight away do the trousers without doing the actual leg.

Fig. / Trousers, Week 13 (28.06.2023)

Then I make the shoes.

Fig. / Shoes, Week 13 (28.06.2023)

Last but not least, I do the hand. I feel the hand thing is the hardest to make among all the models.

Fig. / Hand, Week 13 (28.06.2023)

Then I do minor details, like the ear, the lips, and the button.

Fig. / Details, Week 13 (28.06.2023)

Then I colour it.

Fig. / Colours and materials, Week 13 (28.06.2023)

Then I try to arrange the lighting.

Fig. / try lighting, Week 13 (28.06.2023)

But I am not really happy with the result, so I try to amend it again.

Fig. / Ready to render, Week 13 (28.06.2023)

Then I asked Mr Kamal whether it was okay if the arm was straight like that. I will render it in cycles mode.

WEEK 14 / 05.07.2022

After receiving feedback, I do revisions.

Fig. / Feedback, Week 14 (05.07.2023)

I put the sun as my main light. The spotlight is a rim light and the point light is a reflective light of the eye.

SUBMISSION

WEEK 14 / 05.07.2023 - Project 3

Mario

FEEDBACK

WEEK 12 / 28.06.2023
- Looks good
- Can do more on the details like the ears and the lips.

WEEK 13 / 05.07.2023
- The light under the ear looks weird, maybe we can reduce it
- The model looks good
- Need the keyframe light (major light, probably sun)

REFLECTION

I enjoy this module a lot. I already like to make models or miniatures since I was younger. This is my first time making a model in digital. I'm a bit struggling with my blender since my graphic card is not that high so hard for me to render it fast. I often went out suddenly when I operate the blender. It's because my graphics card can't handle it. However, after all, I'm really grateful to take this module. I realized that the more I do the project, the more I can improve my skills. Of all the projects, this final project I am really concerned with the wireframe. For the other projects, I still can trick it or hide it so it won't that obvious if my wireframe is messy. Since this module is making a character, not a hard surface, I can't simply do the wireframe because it will affect the result. I hope there is advanced modelling. I'm trying to regret not choosing entertainment design because I'm more into modelling than the animation itself. All in all, this module really helped me to hone my skill for work later on.
