W1 - Research
Lectures

Week 1 / 03.31.2022
In our first week, we only have an introduction and a short explanation about MIB. Dr Hayati and Dr Jinchi brief us about our exercises and projects.

<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qL-XHLeLGtFnn6Bi5ZWjSov9UWCrFuz7/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

What is Research?
The systematic and creative investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions. Research can increase the stock of knowledge, culture, and society (pursuit of knowledge).

Why should I do Research?
  • Expands understanding and knowledge of the academic field
  • Defines the academic, career, and personal interests
  • Establish valuable connections
  • Gain academic experiences
  • Develop critical thinking, leadership,  time management, and communication skills.
  • Explore research techniques.
How should I start?
  • Identify the field of interest.
  • Further research about it
  • Write a bit more extensively in the form of a statement.
  • Formulate a research question from the research problem
  • Identify the research objective(s) that you would like to achieve.
<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1b7WblZDW9r4jS787d3WBh3FqbJSDY4W8/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

Before starting to make the research problem, Dr Hayati gave us this article to help us define the research problem.

Steps in Research Problem Formulation
  • Identification of subject area
  • Problem definition and identification
  • Literature Review
  • Selection of research design, subjects and data collection technique(s)
  • Data gathering
  • Data Processing and analysis
  • Implication and conclusions
  • Publish and communicate results
For week 2, this is our task.
  • Confirm your field of interest (provide rationale 200-300 words, with research evidence).
  • Establishment of an area (research problem) where you are interested to conduct research.

Practical

Before we do our research, Dr Hayati wants us to choose our specialisation first. There are Entertainment Design, Digital Animation, UI/UX, and Graphic Design. I think I will choose Digital Animation.

Problem Statement
A problem statement is a concise description of an issue to be addressed or a condition to be improved upon. It identifies the gap between the current state and desired state. The function of a problem statement is to pave way for the reader to understand the research problem.

Research Question

What is Research Question?

The research question is an answerable inquiry into a specific concern or issue. A Research question becomes your first active step and ground of the foundation of your search. Without a question, you can't have research and discussion.

Steps to make good Research Questions.
  1. Specify your specific concern or issue.
  2. Decide what you want to know about the specific concern or issue.
  3. Turn what you want to know and the specific concern into a question.
  4. Ensure that the question is answerable.
  5. Check to make sure the question is not too broad or too narrow.
Research Objective
Research objectives describe what we expect to achieve by a project. May be linked with a hypothesis. Guide to the activities of research.

Hypothesis
A hypothesis is a tentative statement about the relationship between two or more variables. It is a specific, testable prediction about what is expected to happen in a study. Unless a study that is exploratory in nature, your hypothesis should always explain what you expect to happen during the course of your experiment or research (does not have to be correct)

Variables
A variable is something that can be changed or varied, such as a characteristic or value. Variables are generally used in psychology experiments to determine if changes to one thing result in changes to another.

Practical
#Feedback:
  • If you talk about animation is huge.
  • Narrow it down more.
  • Do research more from google scholar.
  • Put problem statement.

For week 3, we need to show our progress for the problem statement, research question, and research objective. Here is my revision.

What is Research Question?
- Uncertainty about something in the population that the investigator wants to resolve by making measurements in the study population
- Uncertainty = data needs
- Identify who should be included, what the outcomes should be, and when the outcomes need to be measured.

Research Question sets out
[v] What the investigator or researcher wants to know
[x] What the investigator might do
[x] What the result of the study might ultimately contribute to that particular field of creative media.

Two categories of Research Question
1. Descriptive question
    • Involve observations to measure quantity
    • No comparison groups/interventions
2. Analytical question
    • Involve comparisons/interventions to test a hypothesis

Characteristics of a good hypothesis
1. Simple
    • One exposure
    • One outcome
2. Specific
    • No ambiguity about study participants/ variables
3. Stated in advance
    • Written at the outset
    • Focused on the primary objective

Research Question and Research Objective

Research
  • An organised and systematic study of a problem where the researcher attempts to address or find a solution to the problem.
  • In order to properly address the problem, specific questions and clearly defined objectives are important.
Research Question
  • An answerable inquiry into a specific concern or issue. It is the initial step in a research project, derived from the problem statement or research objectives.
  • It influences the strategy that is employed in order to either provide answers to the questions or verify/falsify hypotheses.
Research Objective
  • What a researcher expects to accomplish by the end of a research project.
  • Derived from problem statement or research questions.
  • Without objectives, a researcher is aimless and directionless in conducting the study.
  • Is a clear, concise and declarative statement.
  • Focused on ways to measure the variables, e.g. identify or describe, etc
  • A good objective is S.M.A.R.T
    • S - Specific
    • M - Measurable
    • A - Attainable
    • R - Realistic
    • T - Time-bound
  • Should also be relevant, feasible, unambiguous
Inductive Approach
When there is little to no existing literature on a topic, it is common to perform inductive research because there is no theory to test.

Inductive Approach Stages:
  1. Observation
It is difficult to obtain information through the website of Etsy due to its poor design.
  2. Observe a pattern
Conduct a systematic study on another 10 online shops that pose the same problem.
  3. Develop a theory
Poor web design of online shops causes difficulty for customers to obtain information.
Deductive Approach
When conducting deductive research, you always start with a theory (the result of inductive research). Reasoning deductively means-testing these theories. If there is no theory yet, you cannot conduct deductive research.

Deductive Approach Stages:
  1. Start with an existing theory
Poor web design of online shops causes difficulty for customers to obtain information.
  2. Formulate a hypothesis based on that theory
If online shop websites are designed well, all customers will be able to obtain information easily.
  3. Collect data to test that theory
Conduct a survey to collect data.
  4. Analyse the result: does the data reject or support the hypothesis
150 out of 200 survey participants agreed that poor web design hinders them from obtaining information.
Limitations:
The conclusions of deductive reasoning can only be true if all the premises set in the inductive study are true and the terms are clear.

Practical

For week 4,
- Attend the Online Research 101 Workshop via TIMeS from 1-3pm (21st April 2022)
- Prepare the Submission of Assignment #1 Research Proposal - Dateline Sunday, 24th April (at 12pm)

This week we had to complete the workshop and finalize our proposal and slides because it needs to be submitted by this Sunday.

      REFLECTION

      Week 1 / 03.31.2022
I learned to understand more about myself about what interests me. I'm confused between entertainment design and digital animation, and lately, I find UI/UX fun too haha. But I realized that I am very interested in digital animation, like Disney, Pixar animations, etc.

      Week 2 / 04.07.2022
I feel lost and quite stressed after feedback from Dr Hayati. I kept looking and researching more on my revision. I also read again the files that Dr Hayati provided to us.

      Week 3 / 04.14.2022
I'm a little happy with this week because I feel I found the topic of the proposal something more focused, and structured. I just need to fix some parts and also define the title of the proposal.

      Week 4 / 04.21.2022
The workshop is really informative. Give a lot of information about citing in APA style and also a lot of information in the library, which really help me in the future.
