Pasta Grannies - Helena's Apple Strudel

Recipe

Helena's apple strudel is the Süd Tirol version with easy pastry dough.

For the filling:

1-1.2kg eating apples

100g sugar

25g pine nuts

100g chopped walnuts

Zest from 1 lemon

1 teaspoon vanilla essence

1 teaspoon cinnamon

2 tablespoons rum

For the dough:

150g sugar

250g butter

500g flour

3 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla essence (try and use real vanilla, it makes a big difference)

grated lemon zest

2 teaspoons baking powder

Week 4 / 01.27.2022
Today we need to finish our sketch for grannies. These are my art references from Helena's styles.

I take Helena's hotel as my major reference and Helena's cloth as my minor reference. Here is the sketch result.

Week 6 / 02.07.2022

After Ms Anis approved my sketch, I started to continue it. First, I drew the hotels, the ingredients, the process, and also the texts. Here is my progress.

When doing this, the most difficult thing is when thinking about the idea and also illustrating the process one by one. Here is the result.

Next, Ms Anis said that how can people read the direction for the poster? I decided to put the numbers on that. Here is my final result for project 1.

PROJECT 2
Week 7 / 02.14.2022
This week I'm started to create my animation. Before I went to Adobe After Effects, I need to prepare the file first on Adobe Illustration. I decided to make project 2 from project 1, it's like a food factory. Here is my progress.

The file from Adobe Illustrator is really big, so I often get errors from After Effect even though only imported the file. Here are my tips :)

1. Always be patient

2. Do not be emotional

3. Always press ctrl + s (Save)

4. Willing to sit all-day

Week 8 / 24.02.2022
As I said before, I'm planning to make it like a food factory. The food making itself from that window. I made it on one composition, so it's really heavy. Besides, it's a little bit challenging because the time is only 60 seconds or 1 minute. Here is my progress.

The properties that I used are only position, scale, opacity, and mask path. I also applied the motion thing and Depixelation symbol. The motion thing makes my animation movement become more natural. Since each of my processes is really small and many, I really need to click the Depixelation symbol (star or sun symbol). So my vector will stay HD.

Every time I want to look at my result, I need to export them first to see them with actual time because in After Effect the video will be very slow and blurry at all times. Here is the result with no sound.

Next, I search for the sound effect and the background music. Here are my references for sounding.

Since I am already sick with After Effect, I arrange my sound effect and music on Adobe Premiere Pro. Here is my progress.

REFLECTION

In this project, I learned about many things. I've learned to manage my time better so I don't have a hard time approaching the deadline. I also learned to always be patient while working on animations. I learned to always click (Ctrl + s) which is save. It also made me rethink whether I am really going to get into digital animation or not.

I feel patience and perseverance are the main keys to this project. Even though the tasks are tough and the Adobe After Effects software is a bit unreliable, I enjoy doing it. I really enjoyed the process, both pain and pleasure.

The challenge in the illustration is to think of the idea and draw one step at a time. Besides that, the challenge for the animation is to be patient with errors in after effects, the duration of the video is quite short so it makes my animation a bit rushed, and also returns to being patient with the Adobe After Effects. My biggest enemy this time is Adobe After Effects. Really, it often crashes when I start to animate. All in all, I'm grateful to be able to follow and also pass these projects. I am also grateful to have a facilitator like Ms Anis and also Mr Martin. I learned many things from all of them.
